NCPS road crew assessed the roads and school campuses this morning. Due to snow on the secondary roads throughout the county, but especially in the higher elevations, and the low temperatures through the morning which could cause refreeze and concern for travel, Nelson County Public Schools will be closed on Friday, January 19, 2024. NCPS will assess conditions in the morning. An update on the status of schools may be provided in the morning IF necessary. The delay allows daylight to increase temperatures and improve visibility. Due to today’s (Monday’s) snow and its impact on roads throughout the county as well as the anticipated continued snowfall with below-freezing temperatures through the morning when we would have buses, staff, and car drivers on the road to school, Nelson County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. NCPS will work to clear the snow and ice from the parking lots, walkways, and entrances to the school buildings. The safety of our students, staff, and community is our priority. Nelson County has received large amounts of rain Tuesday throughout the county resulting in water levels rising to where several roads are closed due to being underwater. Furthermore, the forecast predicts continued rainfall and high winds this evening and throughout the night while also under a flood watch through 7:00am Wednesday. To provide VDOT adequate time to clean up possible debris on the road and for water levels to recede for our buses, staff, young car drivers, and families to travel safely, Nelson County Public Schools will operate on a 2-Hour Delay for Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Due to the forecast and anticipated inclement weather such as freezing rain in the morning at the time of buses, staff, and students' arrival and large amounts of rain with potential flooding and high gusts of wind throughout the county in the afternoon tomorrow during dismissal, Nelson County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. The Season of Giving has begun. Today was the first day of the Toy Lift drop-off. This year the Toy Lift will be helping over 3,700 local area children, including NCPS students. Thankful to be part of such a great event and to witness the generosity that makes this season better for students and families in need. Such an amazing group of organizers and volunteers who will work to get the rows of tables filled. We even got a chance to tell Santa that our students should be on the "Nice" list. November 6-10 was National School Psychology Week. We are thankful for the meaningful work that the School Psychologists who support our schools, Chrissy Teora and Nancy Cornell, do to support our students, families, and our community. Chrissy and Nancy spend a great deal of time administering assessments, analyzing student performance data, and guiding teams in determining how to best deliver services to our students (among many responsibilities). During the day, I would pick up the colonel in the Humvee at his home, drive him to his numerous meetings, and then return him to his home.
