This special one-night workshop is designed for children with diverse abilities and their parents/guardians. Families will have an opportunity to unleash their creativity, meet new friends, and have fun together while exploring a variety of building materials appropriate for different ages.
While the kids are busy creating and having fun, the activities will also help encourage social interaction and fine-motor skill development.

October is NCPS Kindness Month!
Today is the Kickoff to Kindness Month. Throughout October, NCPS will shine a spotlight on KINDNESS across our schools and community! We’ll celebrate acts of kindness, share inspiring quotes, and highlight pictures and videos that show what kindness looks like throughout #OneNelson.
Kindness doesn’t have to be a grand gesture to make a difference. A smile. An encouraging word. Inviting someone to join you. Helping a classmate or colleague. Listening when someone needs to talk. EVERY act of kindness, no matter how big or small, matters.
While kindness is something we strive to practice all year long, October gives us a special opportunity to recognize it, celebrate it, and remind one another just how powerful it can be.

1% SALES TAX PROPOSAL: KNOW THE FACTS
On November 3, 2026, Nelson County voters will decide whether to authorize an additional local retail sales tax of up to 1% to provide a dedicated funding source for eligible school capital projects.
We know there are questions about what this proposal means for our families, residents, businesses, and community. Over the next several weeks, NCPS will share information to help everyone understand the proposal, ask questions, and make an informed decision.
Here are a few important facts to get us started:
What does 1% mean?
For purchases subject to the additional tax:
$10 purchase = 10¢
$50 purchase = 50¢
$100 purchase = $1
Where could the money go?
The revenue would be legally restricted to qualifying new school construction, major school renovations, and associated bond and loan financing costs. It could not simply be redirected to other County purposes or used for ordinary school operating expenses. NCPS has several projects identified as eligible for this money. The HVAC replacement at Rockfish River Elementary School (estimated at $1.9 million) is an immediate need to support our students, staff, and community.
How much could it generate?
Current conservative estimates project approximately $1.9 million annually after required exemptions.
Would visitors help contribute?
Yes. Residents would contribute through applicable taxable purchases, but so would the many people who visit Nelson County. Based on the County's current conservative estimate, approximately 22% of the revenue (~$418,000) is expected to come from visitors and non-residents.
What purchases could be affected?
Examples include clothing, electronics, furniture, restaurant meals, taxable alcoholic-beverage purchases, hotels and inns, taxable short-term lodging, campgrounds, and other taxable retail purchases. Groceries for home consumption and qualifying essential personal hygiene products would not be subject to the additional 1%.
Over the coming weeks, we will take a closer look at what is taxed, who contributes, how the revenue can—and cannot—be used, and potential NCPS facility needs.

First-Ever NCPS Transition Day for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th-grade, and 9th-grade Students Information
Tuesday, August 11 is our first-ever NCPS Transition Day, and it is only for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th-grade, and 9th-grade students.
On Transition Day, students will ride their regular school bus, enjoy breakfast and lunch, meet their teachers, experience their daily schedule and classes, and become familiar with their new school before all students return.
Pre-K and Kindergarten students will attend from 7:50 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., and
6th- and 9th-grade students will attend from 8:05 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bus transportation will be provided for these students.
Again, Transition Day is only for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th-grade, and 9th-grade students, and it is a school day for these grades only. All other students will begin school on Wednesday, August 12. We look forward to welcoming our students for a great start to the school year. Thank you, and have a wonderful day!

Nelson County High School has updated its entry procedures for sporting events to include the use of metal detectors.
Indoor Events:
Spectators will enter through the main entrance of the middle school.
Outdoor Events:
Metal detectors will be set up near the original entrance for games.
Important Guidelines for Spectators:
Please refrain from bringing items that contain metal, such as vapes, pocket knives, small hand tools, and umbrellas (ponchos are encouraged).
Before passing through the metal detectors, spectators should remove their cellphones, wallets, and car keys.
Be mindful of items that could trigger the detector, and avoid bringing them to the games.
Spectators who do not comply with these guidelines may be asked to return items to their vehicles for entry. Those who refuse to comply may be asked to leave the event.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement these new security measures to ensure a safe environment for students, coaches, spectators, and officials. Nelson County High School will be hosting Open House for grades 10-12 tomorrow, August 7th, from 2-7pm. Families attending open house will need to enter through the middle entrance (between high and middle schools). Stations will be set up in the cafeteria for families to navigate through. Students are to be in the company of a guardian or parent to complete the required paperwork for each station. School spirit gear will be sold in the main hallway near the front office. Good evening NCHS Parents and Guardians,
Tomorrow, Nelson County High School will welcome the incoming freshman class, Wednesday, August 6th, with two sessions of Freshman Orientation: from 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM. A parent or guardian must accompany each student to complete necessary paperwork and pay student fees. During orientation, students will receive their class schedules, and parents will receive information on accessing the Student Portal in PowerSchool. Families and students will be given the opportunity to purchase athletic passes. Please see the fee schedule for the 2025-26 school year. Different payment options will be available for families.
Parents, guardians, and students should enter through the middle entrance between the middle and high schools to access the high school cafeteria. After completing the student information packet and submitting the required documents, families are welcome to visit teachers in their classrooms. If a teacher is located elsewhere, this information will be provided during check-in.
For families unable to attend tomorrow, they may attend Open House for grades 10-12 on Thursday, August 7th, from 2 PM to 7 PM.
