NCHS aims to empower and prepare a community of lifelong learners who will serve as active citizens that are equipped with the skills needed to succeed in an evolving society.

Vision

NCHS will provide rigorous, academic, extracurricular, and technological experiences, with the help of internal and external support, to develop and refine students’ communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and citizenship skills to prepare them to serve as active, independent, and successful citizens who will contribute to the collective good of the Nelson community and society at large.

School Description

Nelson County High School is a four year comprehensive public high school with an enrollment of 500 students in grades 9-12. Instruction is provided by 51 professional staff members. The school is accredited by the Virginia State Board of Education.

School Year

Nelson County High School adopted the concentrated 4x4 block schedule during the 1996-97 school year. Under this semester block schedule, students can earn eight credits per year. They have the opportunity to take four courses each sememster in which the full years course content is presented in one semester.

Community Description

Located in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, Nelson County is a rural county with a population over 15,000. There is no incorporated town within the county and Lovingston is the county seat and the largest community. Wintergreen, an exclusvie 10,600 acre four-season recreational resort, is located on the county's western boundary. Although the county is largely a lower-middle income community, students come from diverse social and economic backgrounds.

Nelson County High School Is located at 6919 Thomas Nelson Highway, Lovingston, Va., 22949.

Thomas Nelson Highway is better known as Highway 29. It is 35 miles south of Charlottesville and 29 miles north of Lynchburg.
