NCPS Division Teacher of the Year

Congratulations Mrs. Stephanie Mayo, NCPS 2023 Division Teacher of the Year!

Ms. Mayo she serves as a mentor, an athletic coach, team leader, Lead Innovator, and Business teacher at Nelson Middle School.

Ms. Mayo works daily to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn and believes all students can learn. She has been gifted with the ability to truly understand the needs of her students academically, socially, and emotionally.  She works to meet all students at their current levels of performance in order to help them succeed.  She goes above and beyond to make sure that students have the knowledge and understanding that they need to be successful.  Ms. Mayo is nurturing and caring while remaining firm, fair, and consistent at all times.

Her passion for teaching and desire to meet the academic needs of the students she works with is evident in her everyday instruction.  Ms. Mayo is knowledgeable about research-based teaching strategies, manipulatives, and resources to create a learner centered environment.  Lessons, activities, and performances are engaging and provide hands-on learning opportunities for all students.  She consistently monitors student performance data and adjusts her instruction accordingly to meet the needs of her diverse learners. 

Ms. Mayo has effective classroom management.  She easily builds and develops positive relationships with her students.  Instruction is meaningful and engaging which minimizes unwanted behaviors in her classroom.  She maintains high expectations for her students and they consistently rise to the challenge and work to their fullest potential. 

Ms. Mayo works collaboratively with her colleagues and is willing to help where and whenever she is needed.   She serves as a positive role model for both staff and students.  Ms. Mayo also serves as our Yearbook Sponsor.

Ms. Mayo is a well-respected educator in the NMS Community.  She is a team player and is always willing to do what is best for our students and school community.  Ms. Mayo maintains a positive attitude and is energetic about teaching and learning.  Ms. Mayo is a dedicated member of the NMS Team and our school community, eagerly volunteering and assisting wherever she is needed.

“Mrs. Mayo is the type of teacher who does what is best for each student while holding high expectations. Her students know her as kind, involved, transparent, and supportive. Students talk highly of her in my classroom and speak of her positively. Not only is Mrs. Mayo effective as a classroom teacher, she also serves as coach for fall and winter sports. She takes pride in being a Mustang and instills this in her student-athletes.

Mrs. Mayo also serves on leadership committees such as Lead Innovators where she is seen as a leader who inspires her colleagues to think outside of the box and connect with the community.”
