Dear Parent:

The Nelson County Public School System provides a free and appropriate education for each eligible child with a disability, ages 2 to 21, inclusive, residing in Nelson County. NCPS assures that children with disabilities are identified, located, evaluated, and placed in an appropriate educational program and are provided with the needed related services appropriate for the child. A full educational opportunity is provided for all children with disabilities from ages 2 to 21, inclusive, including appropriate career education, prevocational education, vocational education, and transitional services.

Children with special needs can be helped. A child, if eligible, can benefit from a special education program in which he/she will receive individualized and/or small group assistance and instruction according to his/her needs. Services range from special classes to include services in regular program classes. Children are involved in the regular education program to the maximum extent possible. Our goal is to help each child maximize his/her ability in becoming a contributing member to society.

Our department works with administration, teachers, parents, and students in offering various Special Education services, Kindergarten through 12. Our services include:

	Speech language disabilities (we have 2 full time speech pathologists)
	Specific learning disabilities
	Hearing impaired
	Visually impaired
	Orthopedically impaired
	Emotionally disturbed
	Occupational therapy
	Physical therapy
	Psychological services (we have a full time school psychologist)

We also offer a Preschool Handicapped Program which is designed to identify two, three, and four year old children with special needs and to provide appropriate educational services for them. Services can be provided at the child's home or in the school.
