Superintendent's Message

4 months ago

Thank you for visiting the Nelson County Schools web site.

July 2018

It is a tremendous privilege for me to serve as your New Superintendent of Schools and I look forward to meeting you and working with you during the upcoming 2018/2019 school year – and many more years to come.

Martha J. Eagle, Ed. D. Division Superintendent

I was so incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a few days meeting and speaking with our dedicated School Board, along with meeting many talented teachers, conscientious division and building leaders, involved parents, and collaborative community members. I am especially appreciative of the time that our retiring Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeff Comer, was able to spend with me. My transition into the Nelson County Public School Division was – and continues to be – very positive and welcoming, and I thank you all!

My intention from my first day forward is to continue as well as build upon the traditions and foundations in Nelson County Public Schools – building on the “Excellence” I know each of us expect from our staff and students.  Through an unrelenting commitment to students, collaboration with all division stakeholders, transparent communication, as well as a high level of candor and sincerity, you have my word my decisions will always be made with our students’ best interest at heart.

Public education, when done well, provides an opportunity to meet all students where they are and move them forward into a bright future. As educators, it is our responsibility to prepare our children for this future, to help them build a post-secondary plan that readies them for whatever path they choose to follow into adulthood – college, a career or the military.

To prepare well, there is always a good deal of work that must occur in the school division during the summer months. Aside from prepping the facilities, hiring top-notch candidates to work with us, creating schedules, and preparing overall for the students’ exciting arrival on opening day, we will be also be identifying division-wide goals and initiatives which will drive all we do.

On my official start of July 1st, I have planned to spend most of July connecting with people – stakeholders within the school family and within our community.  I will be listening and learning, meeting wonderful people who all share the same passion for championing student success. In my entry plan, I further identified goals for my first 100 days to guide my understanding:

·       Build a collaborative relationship with all stakeholders, make connections;

·       Increase efficiencies to ensure strong support for our schools;

·       Establish a respectful culture centered on teaching and learning,

·       Build public trust through open and honest communication; and

·       Focus on student achievement.

What I learned already, and will continue to learn, will help our leadership team shape and embrace division-wide goals that will immediately focus our efforts towards “Excellence”. With everyone focused on these goals, we will be able to educate every child, every day, for a better tomorrow.

I am excited to begin the new school year in Nelson County and look forward to working with this amazing community as we partner to offer our students a tremendous school experience grounded in strong academics, positive advocacy, and meaningful collaboration.

Yours in education,

Dr. Martha J. Eagle
